Ghosts are often times also referred to as a spirit, shadow, shade, specter, apparition, orb, spook, phantasm, phantom, poltergeist, etc.

Definition according to Miriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 10th Edition

"1: The seat of life or intelligence. 2: A disembodied soul. The soul of a dead
person believed to be an inhabitant of the unseen world or to appear to the
living in bodily likeness. 3: spirit, demon. 4: a faint, showy trace. 5: false image
in a photographic negative."

GHOSTLY MANIFESTATIONS--Different Types of Hauntings

Apparition - A figure of a dead person in various stages of FORMATION density from completely solid to very transparent. Also figure could be a shade of a color like white or gray and even close to black.

A Haunting - The earmarks of a haunting are footsteps from unseen, cold spots, warmspots, orbs, vortices, and disembodied voices and music or sounds.

Residual Haunting - A spirit or event replays over and over—sometimes at certain time intervals. This phenomena is often referred to as the Stone Tape theory and is based on the idea that the iron minerals in the surroundings act as a tape recorder of sorts thus recording strong emotional events whether it be personal in nature, or on a large scale. e.g., The Many sightings of ghosts at the battlefield of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Poltergeists - This is a spirit, usually mischievous and occasionally malevolent, which manifests its presence by making noises, moving objects, and assaulting people and animals. The term "poltergeist" comes from the German poltern, "to knock," and geist, "spirit." Included in the most common types of poltergeist activities are the rains of stones, dirt, and other small objects; moving or throwing of objects, including large pieces of furniture; loud noises and shrieks; and vile smells. The Bell Witch case a good example of a poltergeist case.

Orbs - Many believe orbs, which appear mostly on film, are the beginnings of a spirit trying to take form by sucking the energy out of the atmosphere. There is a huge controversy over whether orbs are really manifestations of spirit activity or just dust floating in the air. (See Orbs)

Vortex, Vortices - Clouds of what is allegedly thought to be a substance ghosts and trance mediums emit called ectoplasm. These anomalies usually appear on camera film. The vortex could be various shades of white or gray. Some mediums believe that the vortex is a portal between our world and the 4th dimensional spirit world. Note: Often times caused by a camera strap, hair or finger on the lense.
