COMMON QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT GHOSTS

Q. WHAT ARE ORBS? MY HUSBAND SAYS THAT ORBS ARE NOTHING BUT DUST BALLS. HE SAYS THEY ARE NOT GHOSTS. BUT I TOOK A PICTURE THAT HAS A FACE IN IT!

A. Orbs are a controversial topic. There are three schools of thought about this. Some people believe that orbs are nothing more than reflections that refract into a sphere when the camera flash bounces off dust or pollen floating around in the atmosphere. They say that when faces seem to appear inside an orb, this is merely a perceptual phenomenon in the human brain called matrixing, or the tendency for the human brain to perceive images in the form of familiar shapes. To them, orbs are not paranormal and they tend to dismiss orbs entirely.

The second school of thought says that orbs might be elementals (sometimes referred to as fairies), ghosts, angels, or human souls that simply appear in a luminous spherical form. They believe that Spirit beings will take on a spherical shape because a sphere is the most perfect form found in the Spirit world. These believers point out that there are faces in some orbs. People in this group believe that orbs cannot be dismissed as a mere product of the camera's flash hitting a lens that is close to it, as found today in digital cameras.

The third group believes that orbs are the forms that are produced when energy is transferred from a power source (i.e. a battery or electrical source) into another form. As an example, people in this group believe that the human soul becomes orb-shaped when we die and others think that the human soul becomes orb shaped while transferring energy to become something else, which could be a ghost.

So which school are you? No matter what you believe, it is a fact that orbs are still quite controversial in the world of paranormal investigation.

Q. SOMETIMES I WATCH GHOST HUNTER SHOWS AND THEY SHOW PEOPLE RUNNING AND SCREAMING. TELL ME: CAN GHOSTS HURT US?

A. The short answer is NO. The longer answer is maybe, depending...Depending on what? Well, one thing to remember is that ghosts are people too. This is a saying among ghost hunters. When we "hunt" ghosts, we are mostly hunting the spirits of human beings - a highly emotional, violent and sometimes angry species.

Often, ghosts are thought to inhabit the scenes where they lived or died violently. If you are scared a ghost might hurt you, you can ask yourself: Am I ever scared that another human being could hurt me?

Obviously, we humans hurt each other every day. However, a ghost has one major disadvantage in a tangle with us: they are not physical. We are on our home turf in the physical dimension. It is our realm. It is not the natural realm of Ghosts. Ghosts really shouldn't even be here - they are spirits and should not even be tampering or lingering in the physical dimension at all.

Any damage a ghost or spirit can do is purely mental - but mental damage is still a powerful thing. For those of us still in a physical body, our greatest disadvantage is fear of the unknown. This is what an angry ghost could play on. This is why ghost hunters are seen running and screaming.

Therefore, can a ghost hurt us? Sure, just like a human without a physical body can. But we have our bodies and our minds. So we have the advantage in a conflict with a human spirit. It really is true that our greatest enemy is not a ghost but our own fears.

Q.MY FRIENDS AND I ARE USING AN EMF METER TO HUNT GHOSTS. I KNOW THEY ARE USED TO TELL IF THERE'S A GHOST AROUND. BUT HOW DO WE KNOW THAT THE EMF METER IS NOT JUST PICKING UP MY ENERGY TOO?

A. This is a good question. But first, let's discuss the idea that EMF meters will tell if there is a ghost around. We can only say that there is no certainty that it will. The only thing that an EMF meter (electromagnetic frequency meter) will indicate, is the level of EMF energy in a specific location. However, most common EMF detectors are capable of measuring a range of EMF energy that is fairly limited compared to the entire range of EMF radiation in the universe.

Ghostly_windowElectromagnetic energy is simply a wastebasket term for any radiation that the universe emits to a measurable degree. This means any visible or non-visible radiation. By radiation, we mean energy that is emitted in the form of waves (light) or particles (photons). For instance, a light bulb will emit radiation that is visible. This is the light that we use to read. However, a microwave emits radiation that is not visible when it cooks our popcorn.

According to the NASA site, Imagine the Universe, the Universe itself is the biggest generator of radiation. However, the human brain also generates radiation, or EMFs, even if at an extra-low rate or frequency.

So, if human beings generate EMFs and an EMF meter is meant to pick up that sort of energy, then how do we know if our EMF meters are not really just picking up our energy? The answer is we don't. Run your own test with your EMF meter and pass it over your own body without standing in proximity to any high EMF energy spike areas. This will require you to conduct a quick location baseline scan first to make sure you are not standing next to a wall filled with electric conduits or a microwave.

Another little problem to be brought up is this one: how do we even know ghosts produce EMFs? Just because living people produce a little bit of EMF energy doesn't mean that dead people also produce EMFs. Also, if ghosts do produce EMFs, they may not be producing EMFs that are measurable on modern ghost hunter's EMF meter, which has a limited range. (Note: Look at the LINKS on this site for a good article on this dilemma under "EMFs.")

Q. I AM VERY INTERESTED IN DOING SOME GHOST HUNTING BUT I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START. I DON'T HAVE A LOT OF MONEY AND I SEE GHOST HUNTERS ON TV WITH SOME PRETTY EXPENSIVE EQUIPMENT. WHAT DO I NEED? IS IT POSSIBLE TO BECOME A GHOST HUNTER WITHOUT SPENDING ALOT OF MONEY?

A. Let's hope so! A lot of us don't have the money to buy the kind of expensive equipment used by ghost hunters like TAPS on TV. The high-tech equipment that TAPS and others use has earned respect and interest from those who are empirically minded in our society - and proper and balanced use of such equipment has advanced the field of paranormal.

However, using costly, high-tech equipment has also set an expectation that this is the only acceptable standard in the field of ghost hunting. Nothing could be further from the truth! Ghost hunting has been around since mankind has walked the earth. In more modern times of the 20th century, some of the best pieces of paranormal evidence has been picked up by someone's phone answering machine, an old camera, or a a handheld cassette tape recorder. Many successful ghost hunters get started this way. Finally, don't forget that the MOST important tool of all in ghost hunting is the human element: YOU! The use of your brain and gut instinct are priceless. They are the most valuable tools of all, and you already are the owner of them!

Q. HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE WHAT A GHOST OR SPIRIT IS?

A. There are many definitions of a ghost. It might depend on your view of reality, spiritual beliefs and culture. All world cultures have a concept of ghosts.

In the Western world of the 21st century, a ghost is a dead person whose nonphysical energy inhabits a location or is attached to a person or a group (such as their family).

Ghosts are believed to produce evidence of their existence by making sounds, appearing as an image or moving objects around.
Many people today believe that human beings can become ghosts if they do not "cross over" at the time of their death. Crossing over means going on to the next highest spiritual level - such as "going into the Light" or "going to Heaven".

Ghosts who do not cross over are thought to stay on earth because they have some unfinished business, such as concern over a child, or else being a victim of an emotional shocking event, such as a murder. A good example of this shown in modern film is Ghost (1990).

Q. WHY ARE GHOSTS ALWAYS SEEN DRESSED IN CLOTHES AND NOT NAKED?

A. We don't take our clothes with us to Heaven, do we? I have never heard of a naked ghost! In the history of ghost sightings, all ghosts are observed clothed. Sometimes, ghosts are very elaborately dressed in the style of their day (such as a military uniform of that time).

Something to remember about the spiritual level: it is completely mental. The spiritual world operates completely by thought. Everything that is exists comes about by thought alone.

Therefore, for example, if someone wants to have a nice juicy burger, all a spirit has to do is to think about a burger and one will appear. Likewise, if a ghost or spirit thinks about him/herself, they appear in the clothes they most remember from their lifetime on earth.

Another thought: none of us would dream of being seen naked by other people when we stepped out of our house. Why would the ghost of a human being do this?
